PCR plastic explained: recycled content in bottles and jars

What PCR means

PCR stands for post-consumer recycled. It is plastic made from packaging that consumers have used and recycled, which is cleaned and processed back into resin.

Common PCR resins

PCR PET and PCR HDPE are the most widely used in bottles. PCR PP is also available for some jars and closures.

How it can look

Recycled resin can have a slight tint or small specks, and colors can vary a little from batch to batch. Many brands accept this as part of the recycled look, or choose colored or opaque designs.

Content and testing

Bottles can be made with part or all of the resin from PCR, depending on the material and the product. Ask your supplier for documentation of the recycled content, and test the pack with your formula as you would any new pack.
